FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What kind of people are you looking to accept?
We are interested in welcoming and supporting students who have a strong personal calling to their psycho-spiritual work, who are committed to compassionate service, who have the potential of making a positive impact in their communities and in the world, and who exude an attitude of curiosity to explore their psyche, their shadows, their relationships, and the numinous.
Do I need to have a particular background in order to join any of the Ecstatic Mysticism experiences?
Not necessarily. We are welcoming students who have a genuine connection to the mystery, their personal healing, and their social impact work, even if they have not followed a traditional academic route. If you have explored your relationship to the numinous through shamanism, mindfulness, experiential psychotherapy, activism, or solid immersions into extra-ordinary states for at least several years, for example, and feel ready to commit to your healing and development, we encourage you to apply.
What happens if I can’t attend one of the in-person intensives (retreats and pilgrimages)?
The intensives are crucial components of the overall two and three year program options. You must attend all retreats and pilgrimages in order to graduate from EM, and you will have several options available to you every 6 months or so. However, if you sincerely cannot attend a retreat or pilgrimage during the time they are available, or if you want to attend a particular retreat or pilgrimage but it has already filled, you may be able to take it again at a later time, or choose another retreat when you are able to attend. It is important that when applying for Ecstatic Mysticism (two or three year experience) that you ensure your life circumstances are aligned with making this program a priority and commitment. We will do our best to work alongside you if there are any unforeseen circumstances that arise during your study.
How academic is Ecstatic Mysticism? Are there exams that I will need to take?
Ecstatic Mysticism is a balance of theoretical and experiential learning. You will be required to read papers, to complete a variety of homework assignments, to engage in group work, to write short essays, and to develop small projects that will require both critical and creative thinking. There will not be any written exams; however, you will be graded on the completion of your homework, your participation in the retreats and pilgrimages, as well as other projects such as presentations. If you would like to continue with Ubiquity University with Masters of PhD bridging options, you will also have this opportunity. Find out more about our partnership with Ubiquity here.
Do you have scholarships or options for payment plans?
Ecstatic Mysticism is a project from our NGO - AWE. The payments we receive from students are poured into supporting the many projects we have with the indigenous communities and families we are connected to in Mexico, Ecuador and Gabon. Therefore, we do not offer scholarships to EM students. The payment structure is already divided into multiple installments per year, as outlined above. We invite you to visit our not-for-profit website to see how your student contribution helps sustain the work and community of this program.
